Here I was trying to show the beauty of the daily living of a duck. I tried to avoid those things that would be easy subjects like feeding time, or the incredible amount of poop found around BYU's South Pond.
"Houston we have landing." One of a duck's unique characteristics is the ability it has to fly and float. Here is a shot of the duck taking off headed towards the cold frigid water.
If you've ever thought how a duck can stand the cold water I'll explain how. Well, at least I'll try. A duck has a unique blood vessel system that allows it's feet to be in the cold water but not freeze. What happens is there are A veins and B veins. The A vein comes from the heart and goes into the foot and the B veins go from the foot to the heart. So the heated blood enters the foot keeping it managable for the duck to stay in the water for extened periods of time.
This was kinda fun to watch. You know when you're in church and there is only one teddy bear but two little girls? What happens? There is constant squawking and bickering for possession of the bear. With the ducks there was a nut that for one reason or another was extremely coveted. One duck would get possession of the slippery nut and the others would hover and squabble until the duck would drop it and then they'd all converge! It was fun to watch. Here is a shot of the ducks eyeing the middle one with the nut.
I call this, a duck's beach.
We finish off with a serene shot of a duck grooming.
With this assignment I wanted to show how a duck lives. The most exciting thing that happens is feeding time but with these shots I wanted to show how beautiful the daily things a duck experiences are. This was a fun assignment and it was actually fairly difficult to select which pictures I wanted to post for my final product. My only wish is that I had a better camera so that I could capture the exact moment that I wanted. It was hard to get depth and focus with my Nixon camera I got six years ago.
