You've been Snoozed! (Library Edition)

I'm one of those people who walks around campus and sees the air guitar kid, the way-too-much-PDA-in-public-couple, and awkward-mission-reunion-elders moment and can't resist smiling. But, when I tried to take pictures of these people, they all gave me evil stares and immediately stopped the silly and embarrassing things they were doing. That's when I remembered my favorite sub-group of embarrassing situations: the library snoozers. They won't even know I'm taking a picture of them, so I can get that raw emotion on their face as they dream of…whatever it is they are dreaming of.

Being the creeper I am, I decided to go about the library in search of these sleep-deprived students and capture them on film…in the most artistic way possible:

-It blew me away that I didn't have to go any further than the main lobby of the library to catch not one but TWO students sleeping. I tried my best to take a picture with both of them on either side, employing both the rule of thirds and balance as best as I could:

-If you're going to fall asleep, this is the way to do it. It almost looks like he's on a fold-away mattress or something! Again, rule of thirds with part of people studying in the background:

-After a few rather normal shots, I tried to do things more artistically. I found this young girl asleep in the basement at the end of a long row of empty desks. I put her at the far end to try and emphasize the fact that she was all alone and far away from everyone else. Again, rule of thirds and tried a little depth of field with her actually not in very good focus:

-Another artistic attempt. Found this student with headphones as I was walking around the balcony towards the second level. And I thought…this is an interesting perspective…so I took the shot!

-More sleeping with headphones, this one in the middle of a very busy and loud study area. He had his homework out and was clearly working on it, but was just too tired to go on! Just goes to show a nap attack can happen anytime, anywhere, I suppose.

-This one was by far the most awkward. This kid was throwing away trash and I asked him to stay standing there for a second, then whipped out my camera and took this shot. I like the contrast between the close-up guy on the left and the sleeping girl on the right.

-Haha. And lastly, just for fun, I took this creeper pic from behind one of the faux plants in the bottom floor of the library. The plant serves to draw the attention to the sleeping student!

In conclusion, I feel these pictures tell a story of an aspect of student life. Because we sometimes push our bodies to the limit, we can fall asleep in all sorts of places and positions. We don't really care who might have seen us (or taken a picture of us) while we were asleep. We don't even think about it. Our body wants it and we give in no matter where we are or what we are doing!
