I chose the social group of "Provo Allstar" because it is one that is very relevant, well-known, and talked about here in Provo. It is not only well-known by youth of the Provo/Utah area but it has becoming an increasingly larger stereotype or "snapshot." I discovered this the other day when my dad texted me, asking, "Mo, what is that term used to describe older RMs who try to date freshman girls? I was talking about it with Brother Westerlind (another middle-aged man that lives in my neighborhood in Draper, UT) the other day and can't remember."
A Provo Allstar is a 18-30 year old male living in or around the city of Provo, UT who loves the gym, freshman girls, and talking about his biceps maybe a little too much. In my research I found that Provo Allstars are widely-known as one of the worst things about living in Provo. A recent article in the BYU Universe said that, "the best part about leaving Provo is leaving its Allstars behind." The Provo Allstar image definitely has a large affect of the Provo social scene. They are cast as a villian-type in the Provo scene and freshman girls should beware.
This social group is very 'single storied' because while there is much truth to this stereotype, there are also many 18-30 males that do these things and do not have the same mindset as the described Provo Allstar. There are many Provo males who are afraid that working for Vivint or living at Belmont will automatically stereotype them into the infamous Provo Allstar category. In fact, rarely will you hear a guy tell you that he works or has worked for Vivint without it being followed by a lengthy explanation of why he had to work there and how he is not a Provo Allstar. Also any guy who has previously had an association with the stereotype is automatically shunned by much of Provo and not allowed to remove this stereotype from himself, move on and grow up.
While urban dictionary's definition of the Provo Allstar might be kind of harsh, it also rings rather true to the common consensus of what a Provo Allstar is:

ReplyDeleteHaha that was amazing.
ReplyDeleteNot only is this funny, but true! Whenever you see a buff dude walking around wearing a Vivint hat, you can't help but think Provo All-Star! I enjoyed your insight, but also agree that not all men that fit in this category are worth nothing to the world.
ReplyDeleteI had a good laugh, and can see that there are definitely two sides to every All Star.
