YEAH TEXAS!!

Whenever you hear that someone is from Texas, you immediately assume that they are cowboys who strut around in big ol' boots and a white stetson hats. We've all been in a class where the teacher asks who is from Texas and obnoxious cheering explodes throughout the room. We've all driven by the dorms where huge Texas flags hang proudly in the windows, taking up most of the window. Some have even seen the Texas waffle makers...who wouldn't want waffles the shape of Texas?
Texans are definitely a group that get single storied. Yes, they have their state pride, but they aren't all boot-wearing hicks. This summer I was able to spend three weeks in Texas, and let me tell you, the youth are like youth anywhere else you go. Yes, there are the few cowboys. Yes, if you tell them to dress up on the Fourth of July, they will go all out. But all in all, they are like everyone else in this country.
TV shows, movies, funny videos, pictures and memes all take Texans to the extreme because their stereotype is easy to exaggerate. I promise you though: you will run into so many individuals from Texas and not even know that's where they're from until you ask. Next time you meet someone from Texas, take the time to get to know them. They may not be wearing boots after all (:

  1. Ha, it is funny when you go somewhere and find the stereotype you've known all your life is totally exaggerated.

  2. I for sure look at Texans with the single story view, maybe I just need to visit there sometime.

  3. I also fall into the trap of viewing Texans in this light as well. But when I think about it most Texans I know don't have the thick Southern drawl and belt buckle that you could get satellite TV on.
