The elements in this picture that really stand out to me are first, the majority of the picture is white (the clothing, background, skin tones, flowers, etc...), second the giant flowers, third the daughter behind the mother, and fourth, the facial expressions on both the mother and daughter.
When thinking about the color choice and having everything white I think this signifies purity, cleanliness, maybe giving the impression that this product is for a clean, pure person or family. I also thought that Macy's may be targeting white females, and may be suggesting with the white color that this is a product that will look good with white skin tones.
Second the flowers I think have lots of meaning packed into them. To start, getting flowers for a woman in american culture signifies love, caring, thoughtfulness, romance, and relationship. Without even thinking I would guess that most assume that the woman in the ads husband bought those flowers for both his wife and daughter. The flowers are also huge suggesting that the wife means a lot to the husband. To show his great love for her he bought her a great big flower; so big that the wife is shocked. I would argue that the ad is suggesting that buying your lover clothes like the ones in the ad are equivalent to giving your wife the biggest, greatest flowers. Buying the clothes shows your lover, just like the flowers do, that you love her romantically, care about her, and value your relationship with her. So if you want your wife to feel like a million dollars and be shocked you will by her that snazzy little white cardigan.
lastly I think the daughter plays a crucial role in the ad to show that these clothes are perfect for mothers. The expressions on their faces show that both the mom is suppressed and the daughter is suppressed and wants to see her moms reaction to such an amazing gesture and gift.
I also think the splash of orange on the logo not only draws your attention to the brand name but also says that this brand will bring a splash of desirable, fun color into your life.
