Geeks and nerds. I thought for the longest time that the words were interchangeable. That's not really true. Anyways, my single story of this nerd/geek group was started in middle school. There were kids who were super smart and had low social skills. They weren't very popular and often wore dorky clothes. These kids were classified as geeks/nerds by the whole school. Typical geek/nerds wore tucked in shirts, high water pants, and a squeaky pants. (Think George Mcfly). It matters that these messages are sent because they are pretty exaggerated. Just look at the chart comparison above.
The truth of the matter is that all of us, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US, is geeky about something.
Think about it. Whether it's clothes, shoes, candy, food, video games, sports, the scriptures etc....EVERYONE has something that they obsess about and know ALOT about. It's just how it is. Something about each of us is quirky...
I'm a geek, he's a geek, she's a geek, we're all geeks, HEY! Just accept it.
Hm, you make a good point. Everyone has an expertise in some random field of interest. I think some just get the label of "geek" or "nerd" because their expertise is in a field considered to be uncool by some.
ReplyDeleteits weird how society is trying to popularize being a nerd nowa day. comic con etc
ReplyDeleteI'm not a geek, i'm a nerd!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is really interesting, & recently being a geek/nerd in a fashionable way is actually a fashion trend which I think is really interesting,
ReplyDeleteI love that you so succinctly correlated "geekdom" with "passion." This is a fundamental truth that many tend to overlook.
