Final Project: Displaced- Stories of Struggle in America

The Idea

The objective of this piece is to visually depict the idea of being displaced. The cover conveys the idea of being anonymous and losing identity when being in a new country as an immigrant or refugee and feeling lost. The feature spread furthers that objective with an image that is close to the man’s face in a black background revealing withered lines from a hard life. Black represents darkness, and it is in darkness that the man feels because he doesn’t speak the language and he hides his identity.

Design Principles

1. The magazine header uses the Gestalt Principle of Proximity. The text in the header is close together and the eye can see that those items, which describe the inner contents of the magazine, are related.
2. The feature spread has asymmetrical balance, creating a balance from the way the photograph is placed across two pages and the text on the left.
3. I used leading in the typography of the headline for the feature spread. The font size and style of the piece is consistent throughout. There is a sans-serif font for the headline and a serif font for the text, making it easier to read in print.
4. The  magazine cover uses the rule of third in composition by displaying the passport in the bottom, the top flap of the passport in the middle and the magazine head at the top.
