Time Observation

Time Observation

I did this assignment when I was at the front desk in the newsroom. Although each day in the newsroom is different, there are a lot of things that happen routinely that I can use to measure time.

The first way I observed time was based on the number of reporters who come into the newsroom. Each reporter comes in everyday to meet with his or her editor, and they file in periodically throughout the day. Each time a new reporter came and signed in, I realized that I had been in the newsroom for a longer period of time.

There are a lot of windows in the newsroom too. I decided to measure time by observing the changes in natural lighting in the newsroom throughout the day. When there are hardly any shadows I can assume we are at about mid-day. When the shadows start creepin' in and when we hardly have any natural lighting at all I know that a greater amount of time has passed.

The last way I decided to measure time was by the number of press releases I receive. One of my newsroom responsibilities is to go through the press releases and forward them to the appropriate editor. I had noticed previously that we get 2-3 press releases every hour. With this in mind, every time I got a press release I knew (without glancing at the clock) that approximately a half hour had passed.
