I set out to people watch with my fiancee to see what things we would notice about people. As we went along we had pretty similar things to say, we noticed slightly different things, but overall our ideas of what the people were like were pretty similar.
It wasn't until after the conclusion of the experiment that something truly interesting happened. We went to go grab a bite to eat at taco bell and when the girl took my credit card I noticed that she obviously used gauges in her ears. I remarked about this to my fiancee, and she said that she hadn't noticed at all. When the girl returned my card, my fiancee started telling me how those were not large gauge holes at all, and how the girl had obviously just started using them, we began to speak about her attitude and the way that she carried herself and the possible reasons behind the way that she acted, and I realized that we had completely different perceptions on this girl, solely because of the environments that we had been raised in. She grew up in Oregon, and so she was much more exposed to certain types of people with certain styles, as opposed to myself having grown up in Utah.
I realized that because we initially did the experiment on BYU campus, there wasn't going to be much diversity between our answers because there isn't a lot of diversity at BYU, but as soon as we left campus the stark contrast in our ideas and perceptions was quickly apparent.
Nice observations/discussion
