I wanted to do something simple and only drawn in pencil so that the people I asked to finish them could have a lot of freedom to do what they wanted with it. I also thought that if I did less initially, there would be fewer perceptions of what it was "supposed" to look like when finished. Here are the three finished pieces.
I found these finished pieces to be very interesting. I had told them, like the assignment said, to finish the piece incorporating all of the shapes on the page. I also told them that they were able to use any or all of the writing utensils on the table (I had placed an array of pencils, pens, makers, and sharpies on the table). Going into this, I just assumed that they would all take that literally. To my surprise, however, in the last piece, the artist took those directions more figuratively. She essentially took all of the shapes on the page and made her own shape/figure based on them. This really made me think more about perception and it really is simply how we make sense of the world around us. To her, this is what made sense. However, to the first to artists, it made more sense to literally incorporate the objects already drawn into their own, final piece.
