This Tommy Hilfiger ad has a lot of symbolism and hidden messages being communicated. Although there are no actual American flags in the ad, the color scheme alone, (red, white, blue) is strong enough in the photo that one would relate the brand to patriotism and young Americana.
The lifestyle being portrayed is one filled with adventure, wealth and success, evident by the expensive yacht they are on, the wood finish and large (exaggerated) rope most likely used for the anchor suggests the yacht is very large. the high-priced camera being used, the telescope held by the young boy and the jewelry worn by the woman.
The beach towel draped over the sunbathing chair, the man taking a picture, the bag and shorts worn by the woman shows a life of leisure yet very poised. The pin on the gentleman's sports coat suggests they are educated (students at probably a prestigious University) The woman standing front and center surrounded by 3 males leads the viewer to assume women who wear this brand are strong, beautiful and desirable. The sunglasses worn by the models show a bit of flare to a very classic style, which implies that they are trendsetters.
The lack of an ocean or sky view in the background suggests nothing else matters except those within their social status.
Perhaps it is worth noting that everyone(except for perhaps the kid with the telescope) is wearing glasses and stripes. Totally stylin'.
