Semiotics 2

In my daily scroll up and down my Facebook newsfeed I came across this image as an add for the Kindle Unlimited. Not only did I think the image to be pleasant and interesting I sensed greater meaning in it.

Denotations: Origami folded objects with the printing of book titles on blue pages of books that seem to be connected set upon an orange backdrop. That's literally all you see. Some of the book titles shown are well known including: Harry Potter, Life of Pie, Hunger Games.

Connotations: I think what struck me first, since they stand out, are the origami hats/boats. The fact that they are oragami translates into an association of beauty, making ordinary things into new things, and creativity. If they are hats, placing something on your head along with the association of the book titles creates a connection between reading and imagining. If they are boats than they represent transportation and how books can transport you to new places. The more interesting part in this poster, in my opinion, is the use of blue book pages to look like water under the little oragami boats. Water has many meanings and strong associations. Everyone interacts with water or a need for water daily. Water quenches thirst. Water can help wash clean things. Water in large quantities lends one to explore new places. Water can vary in depth. Water is patient and powerful; it can wear down earth. Combining this many associations with what we have connoted the boats to mean creates the larger picture. Books are necessary, there are many vast options for reading and as we choose to make reading part of our life we can gain depth to our character and add more imagination to our life.
