semiotics 2

Banksy is one of my favorite artists. His street can be found around the world. The art is simple, and cleverly placed in its surroundings to create an image that although small in stature, has a message that cannot be measured.

This particular piece can have so many different meanings depending on those looking at it. You have a man hitting the wall with his bat either creating a heart or trying to destroy it. I'm not sure where this particular piece is, but depending on it's location and current state of affairs, this piece can have an incredible meaning. For example, if this was in area dominated by ISIS, the piece could be crying for freedom from fear and tyranny.

The heart means many different things: the central source of power and life, source of change and drive, love, passion, freedom, and peace. This piece could be using the heart to suggest peace, freedom and love or the change of heart we to have to start accepting peace, freedom and love.

Black has many meanings. Black meanings: power, control, authority, independence, strong will, and sophistication. Which could imply that this piece is trying to keep the peace, love, and freedom. Black can also mean: intimidation, unfriendliness, fear, seriousness. This piece could imply that the piece is suggesting the control of love, freedom and other personal luxuries associated with the heart.
