As you first look at this painting, you notice many things. There are men, wearing armor and carrying weapons, that have their hands in the air. Women are in the background crying and holding each other and their children. They are all wearing different clothes and different colors of clothes. They are in an old building, that is vacant beside their party.
As we start to piece together the symbols in this image, the connotation of the painting as a whole becomes very clear. The women are weeping because these men must be very close to them. Probably their husbands. The tears symbolize that they are scared or worried, about what they are about to do.
As the painting's name indicates, these men are entering into an oath. Their uncoordinated attire shows that this is an underground operation. This oath, symbolizes power, and determination. It stands for a cause that innately draws others in. It forces us to admire their courage, and to hope for their cause.
At this time in their world, they were often ruled by Tyrants and burdened with corrupt leadership. This painting, according to the symbols and overall connotation we have derived, was created to remember the bravery of those who stood in defense of their families and beliefs. These men aren't part of an army, or they would have matching uniforms. They are working to protect the families that they love. This image captures and conveys all of those emotions much better than words could ever communicate.
