Semiotics Assignment #1

1: Signifier:

  • A fairly smooth-looking metal statue of a larger-than-life bull.
  • Light from above the picture.
  • Located in a city, on a brick path.

2: What does it signify?

  • Power
  • Aggression
  • Force
  • Initiative
  • Determination
  • Probably meant to represent those who are employed in the area (Wall Street).
  • Signifies a raging fight against something.

3: What supports your analysis?

  • The Bull's brow is furrowed with determination, suggesting many of the bullets listed above.
  • The Bull's stance suggests that it is leaning or fighting against some unseen force, it is in motion. To me, this suggests there is a fight going on and the Bull is determined to win (teeth gritted and ready for whatever is to come.
  • Wall Street is known as a notoriously brutal and stressful place to work. Employment there is not for the faint of heart. The fact that the Bull is here is not coincidence, it is meant to reflect the characters of the people there.
