This is an installation
Freedom by Zenos Frudakis.
Why does this thing
look the way it does?
The concrete looking
material that the sculpture is made of blends perfectly with the giant ominous cooperate
building behind it. I believe the artist created this appearance of the same
material on purpose. To appear as if his work was part of the building itself. the
emerging figures begin in a generic form push out from the wall progressively
each one more and more separated and detailed till one has broken free from the
wall/ building itself. No longer ties to the building it appears to be prancing
about full of life and joy while the others are still struggling encased by the
wall behind them.
Why are they saying this?
I
feel like the artist is really trying o say something with this piece that he
sees a need and wants to describe a solution. or perhaps he is simply
commenting on a situation or telling a story from his past. The place he choose
to display this is calling for attention and curiosity. To get people to think
I think more about themselves then perhaps himself.
Why am I doing this?
I
took a few sculpture classes over the course of my college career and fell in
love with the genre of art. I love how sculpture can be viewed in countless
perspectives and the meaning can change depending on how the piece is interact
acting with its stage or environment.
What are they really
saying?
In my
interpretation I think it’s a metaphor of how us in our modern society choose
to civilly and sociably meld into our society and cooperate identity being
stuck in place as the whole not individually being molded and patterned after
social and cultural normality making each and every one of us the same boring
whole. I think the artist was birthing the idea that if we pulled our self away
from the mass and separated our self from our society and or cooperation we
would be more colorful vibrant and happy free to be our self and act as we
please. We would have more detail in life and that much more happier and better
off.
What am I really doing?
Im thinking of ways that I am influenced or fall under the
affects of social peer pressure. Does the way I rely on my car as a mode of transportation
very wise? Should I take alternative routes or modes to get to the places I
need to be? Do my final destination day after day really worthy of my time or
should I change the way I use my time throughout the day? Does our society
really evolved for the better after the centuries. How did we get here and
these rules and customs float to the top in our society?
These are some of the thoughts that stirred in me after
analyzing Zenos Frudakis.work.
