A Picture's Worth Like 10,000 Words

At least when you're seven it's worth that many words.

So, there I sat -- preparing a primary lesson for a room full of hyper seven-year-olds. Topic: Remembering Jesus Christ When We Take the Sacrament.

"Well!" I told myself, "that seems simple enough!"

Reflexively, I flip through the the lesson manual to the back appendix, already warming up the copier to print off whatever golden visual aids lay waiting for me and my seven-year-olds.

Nothing.

Now what do I do? I figure I've got a couple options:

1. Tell some extra stories that can help the kids "see" what it means to think about Jesus during the sacrament or

2. Come up with my own visuals to help them "get the picture."

The latter sounded like a blast and here's what I came up with!

Meet Joe, your ordinary, everyday primary child just trying to do what's right.

I gave the kids some options of subjects to think on during the sacrament and then they had to say "yes" or "no" and put them in there respective places on the board.

The "not-so-goods",

And the "goods"!

We even had a little bit of fun playing church-themed memory, just to help us know what the word "remember" actually means :)

Then each little guy and girl got to take home their own little good thought. The picture even looked a little like themselves!

They ate it up and I'm so grateful I took the leap and trusted that I know my kids well enough to teach them in ways they'll understand.

Indeed, creativity loves constraint.
