Gestalt examples

Sadly this was an assignment where my artistic vision DEFINITELY exceeded my design capability. But I did what I could. Here's a porcupine.

So my idea here was to make a porcupine using only the quills. Using the gestalt principle of closure, i designed it so your brain closes the gaps between the quills so that it looks like a single object. I used some foreshortening and angle manipulation to achieve a somewhat of a 3-D effect. Using the gestalt principle of similarity, I made the quills in each row the same size so you would perceive them as being related. After placing the quills, I realized I had no idea how to finish it, so there you have the cutesy little face.

I found an example of a gestalt principle in a mural in the HBLL:

This mural uses the gestalt principle of continuation to draw the eye towards the pair of students in the middle. All the lines of architecture and most of the characters in the painting lead you to focus on the center.
