Gestalt

While driving to Salt Lake I saw this billboard which is an example of Gestalt's closure principle.  Although the word "truths" is cut in half we can still read it.  Cutting the word in half also has a double meaning- No (half) truths here.

To display Gestalt principles I created this image.  I think its really interesting how we can read words even when parts of words or letters are missing so I decided to play with this idea.  I did so by taking a picture my roommate took and overlaying text on it.  Then I made the illusion that parts of the text were behind the people while other parts were in front by erasing parts of the letters.  This demonstrates closure because although parts of the letters are erased our mind can still tell that the text says BYU.  I think this also shows figure/ ground because our mind sees the erased letters not as erased but weaving through the people creating an illusion.
