Gestalt Principles

The two Gestalt principles that I used in my picture above are continuation and closure. The lines that break through the letters and through the trees in the picture lead the eye from the left to the right. It is natural for us to read the words from left to right, but the gradual indentation of the lines aids in this process. The lines also create the Gestalt principle of closure. They break up the letters, but we are still able to read the words, despite missing some of the information.

I found this flyer for a local band's concert on my friend's kitchen table. Until we had the discussion in class, I never realized how often I see the Gestalt Theory used in my life. This flyer in particular uses the Gestalt principle of figure/ground and closure. The trees in the picture are not fully outlined, but our minds fill in the blank spaces even when a bit of information is missing. The trees can be either the main figure, or you can switch them with the pink circle and put them in the background.
