According to Gestalt Principles, closure occurs when an object is incomplete or there is a space that is not completely enclosed. Here is an example of a hot air balloon where there are striped shapes, and a black silhouette of an air balloon. However, each of these shapes are not completely closed. Our minds perceive this image as a whole by filling in the missing parts.
This image also has continuation as our eyes move from the top of the hot air balloon to the bottom of the air balloon basket. The lines draw us in and point towards the basket.
Here I created an image with random stripes, lines and dots to appear to be a tiger. While none of theses shapes or lines are connected, your brain is perceiving the image as a whole and thinks it is a tiger. Your eyes are also drawn towards where the stripes lead you and so it illustrates continuation as well. While you may notice stripes and shapes, you are drawn from these stripes to the jawline of the tiger or the large block of black. This jaw shape creates a mouth of the tiger. Without this jaw shape, the tiger would appear to be a different type of figure and probably be more unknown.
