This is an example of continuation and similarity. The chevron pattern must be separated from the writing to understand the writing. Also, the changing direction causes the reader to stop and change perspective to continue reading. The similarity is that the writing all belongs together, but it goes in different directions, causing question of whether it really is in the same group/category.
While I didn't take a photo, I did find this example online of the figure/ground category. The markings that look like stairs are just painted on the ground and wall. It's a really cool picture, and the guy pretending to climb the stairs just enhances the illusion.
