For my Gestalt exploration, I wanted experiment with a few different theories. I took one single element and repeated it over and over with some slight variations in size and orientation. The result was a messy mass of duo-heads (headz). But in classic Gestalt style, the combination of heads also spelled out the word, "headz," illustration a figure/ground effect. One can focus on the head(z) or the letters they form as a whole. The arrangement also lends to proximity principle as groupings of heads combine to form what we perceive as letters. Finally using the principle of continuation, our eyes overcome the gaps between the heads and their irregular spacing to form continuous, legible letters.
Here's a close-up of my puzzle piece:
And here's my Gestalt in the world:
As I sat at my desk thinking about where in the world I would find examples of Gestalt principles I looked up to see this little diagram on my sewing machine. It shows how to thread the machine before use. A dotted line represents the thread as it passes behind the surface of the machine and loops around the different machine components. Our eyes use the principle of continuation to recognize the dotted line as a continuation of the original solid red line.
