Hipsterfication, are you a HIPSTER?

Start with this video, (P.S Stop at 3:42 if you don't wanna hear the A word and sorry about that guys!)
Would you consider yourself a Hipster? NO!? WHY?!

Hipster is considered as an non-mainstream group of people who enjoy indie music, have non-mainstream fashion sense, and sustain alternative lifestyle. Aren't they sound awesome? Everyone of us just want to live the way that you want, aren't you? So, I am a little confused... As Hipster is actually living the way that they want and apparently this is a new trend in America while no one dares to admit it.

Honestly, if I consider myself having some sort of Hipster, I won't admit it at all because I know everyone hates Hipsters and no one wants to be defined as a Hipster. As Peter Furia from Time magazine said, “What’s funny is that people who aren't hipsters generally express distaste for them and those who appear to be hipsters hate to be identified as such. Everybody hates hipsters… especially hipsters,” Thanks to the media, the word hipster gets lots of negative connotations. They are arrogant, cynical, and they think they are better than you. These are the stories about Hipsters.

First, Hipsters contradict themselves a lot. ( After watching this, I feel like I hate Hipsters... They are nonsense to me!!!)

Second, Hipsters are OLD PEOPLE?

Third, Hipsters are HOBO?

Forth, Hipsters are unemployed? (This is a subway ad found in the subway at Canada, tho.)

Fifth, Hipsters are gay?

The one single story about Hipster is simply that they are TROUBLE.

To be frank, Hipsters are not harming the world. And the way to define a Hipster is not so clear yet. I am sure this "hip" trend is gonna last for a while... probably 20 years, or maybe 60 years. Some people are solely trying too hard to look cool and create their own lifestyle. This is not fair to put them in a situation that they are bad.

I bet we all wanna get a little bit away from the mainstream, right? Just keeping to yourself. :^)

Relax and be a HIPSTER!

  1. I think this is an interesting group to talk about, especially with them being so popular today. I liked the use of the YouTube videos, particularly the first one. The raw interviews show people's true feeling on hipsters, and their feelings are in accordance with your analysis of them.

  2. I also think this is an interesting topic. Hipster seems to be the new normal. So, does that make someone hipster because they aren't like the hipsters with big glasses, vintage clothing, and bright red lipstick? Basically, does not being hipster make you hipster? Mind boggling, right? ;)

  3. I love the comparison chart. Although I like the mindset of the hipster group, it really does seem silly when it's laid out on the table like this.

  4. It's so funny how complicated the webs of irony are in the hipster world. A hipster usually won't admit they're a hipster, because they defy labels. But I've also seen people harbor secret pride when they're dubbed a hipster. Like Morgan hinted at, hipster trends have become so ubiquitous and mainstream, that it seems like you need to defy hipster stereotypes these days to actually embrace one of the main hipster values: obscurity.

  5. It's so true that the word 'hipster' has negative connotations - absolutely no one wants to be identified as a hipster. And I think the Canadian subway ad is kind of funny, just because it's such a strange thing to put on an ad. I disagree about the hipster phase lasting for a long time though. I think it's just another fad that will cycle out within five years or less.

  6. I think "true hipsters" are in a different category that are just passionate about certain things and don't care about mainstream culture. What I think is sad is people trying too hard to fit in on a level they don't understand. Hipsters have been around forever, but the term has only been an issue in the past decade. I think the characteristics aren't what the stereotypes make them to be.

  7. This was really interesting for me to read and I enjoyed the pictures that accompanied it as they helped to give me a good sense of the single story that is being portrayed about this particular group.

  8. I think the hipster idea is a very interesting one. It's true that no one wants to be considered a hipster and they hate the idea of a hipster. But what's so bad about being a hipster? It's just an interesting label people put onto others who don't dress the way they do or think they way they do. Yes, hipsters may be obnoxious, but they're just trying to be different than you.

  9. One of the weirdest things when I got back from my mission was the hipster craze that hit the west coast by storm. never before had I seen so many people rocking the big glasses, ugly shirts, tight pants and old school shoes in my life. Now it just seems normal

  11. I think hipster is such a broad word. I do believe that we describe hipsters as those that like indie music and dress a certain way. However, I have seen a bunch of people that may dress like a hipster, but just like that style.

  12. This is great. I spent some time in D.C. last year and there is definitely a great hipster presence there. I have to agree with the comment above though that hipster is a very broad term. There are so many sub-groups within the hipster idea.
