Country

The single story for this group is that if you are “country” you are a naïve redneck that isn’t cool and has no ideas about social norms. Twitter spreads an absolute hatred of country music, TV gives programs that show country people just doing stupid things all the time, and movies portray them exactly as mentioned above. The artifacts convey this message by creating an image in our minds that ALL people from rural towns or country regions are hicks and rednecks. It creates a precedent to treat these people differently and like idiots.
It limits us to only seeing the flaws and foolishness that accompany small group of these people while completely ignoring the fact that 99% of rural and country people have some of the most admirable qualities you could as for. We look at the foolish things that a small minority do but miss that rural and county people often have strong family and community ties, are charitable and hardworking. We limit their story to only looking at the things that we have that they don’t.
The way that the media portrays rural and country people in most films and movies is inaccurate and focuses too much on the daft quirks of a minority of these people, instead of presenting the entire story of the majority. We portray them as idiotic members of society in our media and our minds. We often spend so much time equalizing so many other minorities and groups that we forget to treat our own groups correctly.

  1. After watching duck dynasty for the first time and one episode of honey boo boo I can see just how dumb they really are portrayed in the media. To also say that a lot of country people have close ties and focus on family may also be an assumption though because after listening to some country music there are a lot of other common trends out there that focus on the opposite of family

  2. Being country is so in right now. It's showing up in media, language, and even fashion. It's a sad stereotype, but I feel like the media coverage it's getting has helped humanize those who would have previously been seen as ignorant yokels.
