I chose to observe people with one of my friends in the Cougar Eat during lunch time. We strategically sat so that we could see most of the fast food lines and who were entering them. We sat for five minutes and wrote everything we thought about the people walking into each of the various lines. At the end of our five minutes we both had very long lists which ranged from the word "tool" to the word "hungry."
It was funny to see how differently we perceived what was happening and how differently we perceived the types of people walking into the different fast food lines. Our lists were not dramatically different, I think this was because we are best friends, we grew up in the same area, we are almost the same age, and we are in a pretty similar life situation. I think our lists differed because of what we are studying in school. She is studying elementary education, so she noticed the details and read them as a teacher would, whereas I read them more as a communications major would.
Different factors cause us to perceive people, situations, products, and even food differently. When I saw someone walk up to Taco Bell I automatically thought that they don't want to pay much for their food. When I saw someone walk up to Subway I thought that they had more time to waste waiting around for food in the Cougar Eat. Although this may not necessarily be the case, thats the way that I personally perceived the food choice. My friend said she had similar ideas when she was writing down her observations as well.
