Semiotics #2

NOTHING HAS EVER MELTED MY HEART LIKE THIS DOES OH MY GOODNESS GIVE ME ONE NOW.

As it is very clear to see, this is a picture of a baby cow, also known as a "calf." Anyone can see the basic visual aspects of this image- it is a cow, it is brown and white, and it has its tongue out. Everything else about this image though, is determined differently depending on who is viewing it. Many people, for instance will look at this cow and see that it is "cute." Others, if they are really hungry right now, or have a strong love of barbecue food will simply see it with a potential of one day being a delicious steak. Maybe those with a farming/ranching backgrounds will immediately know what kind of cow this is and only be interested on its potential value. They might see this way because after seeing so many cows in their lives, they are numb to its emotional appeal. And then there may be that group of the population who see this as a gross animal. Due to their experiences around cows maybe, all that they might see here is just a smelly, hairy, slobbery, over-sized animal that does not belong anywhere around them.

For me, I see this picture and my heart immediately melts to the floor. This could be due to the fact that I am a girl and have very strong emotions about anything that is cute. I absolutely love babies. AND, I absolutely love cows. So the idea of a baby cow makes me want to to just run and squeeze this darling little thing with all my might. Out of pure love, of course. Again, this image can mean a very different thing depending on who is looking at it.
