Semiotics 2 - Attending BYU

Why does this thing look the way it does?
Attending BYU gives off the connotation of both REALLY smart and some would say REALLY arrogant.  This is because BYU is a private University that is fairly difficult to be accepted to.  For these reasons, BYU has garnered respect from all around the country.  Just because someone goes to BYU, doesn't necessarily mean they are ridiculously smart or arrogant.

Why are they saying this?
People say these different things about BYU because frankly they don't know the students at BYU or they are bitter or upset that they weren't accepted.  Unfortunately people either love or hate BYU, there is no real in-between.

Why am I doing this?
I am doing this because as a student of BYU, I believe it is important that people understand we are normal and nice people.  I didn't do well on the ACT, I don't get A's on every test, but I am at BYU doing my best to gain the best education possible.

What are they really saying?
People are really saying they are upset that they don't go to BYU or they are upset that our sports teams keep beating theirs.  It is the hard fact that people don't like what they can't have.  I'll admit it; if I didn't get accepted to BYU I would be partially bitter and upset.  But hey... I'm here and absolutely LOVE it!

What am I really doing?
What I am really doing is letting people know that the different perceptions and ideas about BYU are not necessarily true!  People need to visit BYU and associate with us students to truly learn that we are normal.  Like any school in the country, we have that 1% that creates a bad image; we just have to help others see the 99%.
