Semiotics 2

This street art shows a man, in all black, walking with a brief case and umbrella as he walks through a colored rain.  The man grips his umbrella and brief case tightly with an agitated grimace on his face. To his right is a young colorful child, with arms outstretched, head tilted back and tongue stuck out catching the colorful rain.

The image of the man and child in the rain is so much more than just two humans experiencing a common weather occurrence.  The dripping paint most obviously represents rain but it could also be any joyful or fun experience in life.  The man represents the every day adult.  They are practical, working, busy, and have very little time for frivolous things.  There is no time for nonsense.  His black suit signifies this attitude of seriousness.  His posture and face expression signify his closed off personality and his lack of joy in his life.  His umbrella is opened blocking all of the color and rain from getting to him.

There is a ginormous difference between the man and the child to his right.  The completely colorful child represents the joy and happiness in life.  Taking time to enjoy the colorful rain, the child tilts back its head and sticks its tongue out.  The child is open to life and the joyful experiences it has to offer.

Somewhere between the imaginative childhood and working adulthood, we as "responsible" adults loose the creativity and joy of the simple pleasures life.
