Semiotics Assignment (Jhonatan Larrocha)

The signifier here is a bronze bull sculpture. It is placed on a street and there are people surrounding it. It stands for power and aggression. This is an infamous bull sculpture found in Bowling Green Park, close to Wall Street in Manhattan, New York City. Its supposed to represent "aggressive financial optimism and prosperity." By the expression sculpted on its face, its ready to charge stance, and the mere fact that is a sculpture of an unsubmissive bull, it clearly symbolizes what Wall Street itself represents - a giant force of power and money and ambition. It is placed in the middle of the walkway, so people have to walk around it. Similarly, this business sector is filled with this sense of "no one can stop us, get out of our way" type mentality. No one stands in front of Wall Street - we all walk around it and let it pass. With the economy going down, the bull might be a symbol of hope or a reminder of what Wall Street stands for, even in times like these; or, to some, it might symbolize the time to bring down this bull.
