The caption of this photo reads, "Taken during the Mayana Soora Thiruvizha festival, which takes place every March in the small village of Kaveripattinam, the day after Mahashivarathiri (the great night of Shiva). The festival is devoted to Angalamman, a fierce guardian deity worshipped widely in southern India." Photographs capturing culture intrigue me the most. I'm not only captivated by the color, but also by the the child's eyes. What does she think of this festival? How will the traditions and beliefs she has grown up practicing affect her adulthood faith? Whose hand is painting her face? The pattern of red dots around her eyes and gushing red paint in the palm of the person painting are other compelling elements that drew me to this photograph.
