Have you ever noticed this design on the side of the HBLL? This demonstrates the Gestalt Principle of Proximity. The design is made up of a series of holes in the stone that are in different shapes and positions, but they're not actually connected. We just perceive them to be a group because they are close together.
This is the design I made based on the Gestalt Principles using "Paint" (computer application). It's a series of five separate arrows positioned in a circle. There are four Gestalt Principles in this design:
- Figure/Ground: The mind organizes the "star" and the arrows into figure and background.
- Similarity: Because the arrows look similar, we perceive them as a group.
- Proximity: Because the arrows are close together, we perceive them as a group.
- Closure: Although these are five separate arrows, our minds fill in the blanks and we see a star in the middle.
The "star" shines through, even though it's not really there. A star is born...literally.
