Sometimes my mind wonders in relief society on sundays and this sunday I noticed this painting in our class. It demonstrates Gestalt's principle of similarity. It's hard to tell from the angle of the photo but if you look closely you will notice that the white sheep close to Christ are clearly outlined where as the sheep further in the back of the painting look like little white blobs. But because the blobs in the back look similar to the clearly apparent sheep in the front of the painting our mind assumes that the white blobs in the back of the painting are also sheep. If we were to look at one of the blobs alone we probably wouldn't be able to tell what it is supposed to represent. But similarity helps us to draw the conclusion that it is a sheep.
I based my own creation of Gestalt's principles off of this painting. I grouped together different shapes, but some shapes that are perceived to be in the same "group" are different colors. Because they are similar in shape, the different color doesn't effect our mind when placing them in the same group.
In addition to the similarity principle, the shapes also demonstrate closure principle with the lines going through the shapes. We fill in the gaps that the lines create and are able to see the whole shape despite the missing parts.
