I am passionate about the game of hockey. So, naturally, when we were asked to choose a topic I immediately knew what my topic would be.
The game of hockey is not well known in Utah. I think it has something to do with the perception that all hockey players are ugly, toothless, foul-mouthed thugs. Although that perception is not altogether wrong, my purpose for this assignment was to show that hockey is a game that is fast paced and requires more skill than any other sport.
The equipment:
Tools of the trade. These are the weapons used when playing the game. They take quite a beating, but can make or break your game.
The face-off:
The game can change in a split-second. And it all starts with the face-off. Depending on where the face-off is being played, goalies have to be on their guard because the puck can go from the face-off circle into the goal very quickly.
What it's all about:
The game is relatively simple when you think about the objective: get the rubber puck into this 6'x4' net. All you have to do is be faster than the guy between you and the mesh. Easy, right?
A player's view:
It's hard to fully understand what a player sees when he is on the ice. There is so much going on so quickly that makes it impossible to describe. Maybe a picture can help.
The risk:
A sport played at this speed on this slippery of a surface is bound to have some injuries. And there are injuries all the time. The poor guy in this picture fell after going fast towards the wall. He ended up breaking three bones in his ankle and had to be wheeled off the ice. It's all part of the game.
