Christians are single storied as, blind followers of bigotrous patriarchal leaders. The media portrays christians as people who degrade and demonize the LGBT community. For example the recent happenings of Kim Davis the county clerk who refused to issue gay marriage licenses. How christians lead the charge on “The Attack on Gay Rights.”
Christians being portrayed this way is bad because it’s portraying a small groups of people as the majority of all christians. The same problem that happens with all stereotyping.
This single sided story is limiting because the Christians in my life I feel for the most part have been thoughtful and genuine.
My stance on this issue as a Christian and is summed up nicely in this quote by the atheist Ira Glass “Often times, the line between defending your beliefs and apologizing for your fellow believers can simply be found by living your faith.”
Frustratingly true, appreciated the insight.
ReplyDeleteWHile the insight to the single story is good Scott, there is not enough analysis or evidence that this single story exists. We needed more than just the one example to really see that this single story is portrayed.
