Perception #2 - Muslim Stereotypes - Jordyn Crowley

 100 lashes

The single story that represents Muslims includes the following assumptions: Muslims hate Christians, Islam condones killing, and Muslims are terrorists. In every form of media-- just the artifacts here include videos, news stories, commentaries, and even cartoon images-- Muslims are depicted as "obscene" and "threatening," and their beliefs are "madness." Because of this story, the majority of the world distrusts and dislikes Muslims-- as a people and on the individual level.
This single story is so limiting of the 1.5 BILLION Muslims in the world. Theirs is a story that promotes hate and distrust among diverse peoples and fosters animosity throughout the world. If the acts of terrorism that often bring Muslims to the forefront of the news were committed by same number of Christians, the world would simply blame extremists-- not an entire faith. It is disheartening to see a group of people so universally hated, feared, and discriminated against.
It is hard to imagine a time when Islam was an accepted religion; I cannot remember such a time in my lifetime, and do not foresee ours being a world in which it is possible. Because of the messages of hate, terror, and ignorance sent by the media, Muslims will never truly be free from their "single story."

  1. I agree with everything you stated. I am taking a World Religions class right now and we talked a lot about the Muslim religion. Especially in America, people are so quick to judge Muslims as being "threatening."I think in large part, this is because of statements from our politicians.

    1. World Religions was my favorite class!! I think that's why I feel so strongly about this issue. I suppose we all have our biases :)

  2. I second all of this. I especially love how you recognize the effect that this single story has on them and how harmful it is.
