Post Halloween

For this project I decided to take pictures of how some people around the Utah valley celebrated post Halloween. It was my goal during this project to take myself out of the shots as much as possible and to try to capture what was really going on. I wanted to capture the excitement, frenzy, and the craziness of the celebration. The particular even I attended was a pumpkin "slash-bash" event held in Springville the day after Halloween. After taking about 150 or so pictures I thought that these five pictures above represented the event's atmosphere and story the best. Starting with the first image we see a toilet being demolished by hundreds of pumpkins with a tractor holding many more for another round of destruction. The second picture shows the crowd looking on as pumpkins hurl down towards a pool of water. I really liked how the camera captured the flow of the water shooting upwards and the man in the left corner holding up his hands. I chose the third image because of the uniqueness of a helicopter hovering overhead hurling pumpkins out toward targets. I contrasted its position with the crane's to add depth. The last two images are my favorite because they tell the story the best. A trailer burns on fire as a man looks on, and the last shows a group of children throwing pumpkin remains into the trailer that is burning down. I used the rule of thirds, the shutter speed, and the color and location of my pictures to help tell this story.
