My photography project tells the story before every night out; it is the story that men do not know or understand. We, as women, spend hours getting ready and WE LOVE IT. We love it almost as much as we love going to the event we are getting ready for.
I spent the weekend in Midway for a bachelorette party and captured shots over a period of hours as the girls showered, shaved, mixed and matched outfits, shared makeup, curled hair, and looked in the mirror over and over and over again while gossiping endlessly. My sequence of photos begins with Mary Claire, alone, applying lipstick. The lighting and shadows of this picture achieve a serene vibe. The picture is very still and quiet. I then move to Sam, curling her hair in the bathroom. This shot gives the viewer a personal look into Sam. Her back is visible; she is clearly looking in the mirror; I composed this photo so the viewer could fill in the blanks for themselves. My next photo shows the more social aspect of the getting ready process. I love that the girls are all in black. Maddy is in focus, while Meghan and Charlotte are blurred, all getting ready in different ways. The composition of the photo brings a depth of interest with three different scenes to analyze. The next photo is taken from a new perspective and angle. The viewer gets to watch the girls in the mirror while seeing the makeup products on the counter. This image has so much life because Sam and Charlotte are mid-laugh. I closed my collection with an incredible shot of all the girls in one bathroom. By the end we had all gathered in the same place to put on the finishing touches. This photo embodies the story of women getting ready, a realm that men will never understand.
