Anybody Wanna Donut?

Who sits in their car, eating donuts, scratching their belly and protecting society?

Who else? It's the cops!

Now, these cops are different from the NYPD, CSI, CBI, SVU or NCIS teams that are led by the really cool cops wearing street clothes with their perfectly coiffed hair wafting in the wind as they run down the bad guys. No, those are the cool guys that you never get to meet in real life because they are off solving all the high-end crimes.

I'm talking about the fat, lazy guy who only wants to write you a ticket because he doesn't have anything better to do today.

So much of today's media reinforces the idea that cops are stupid, lazy, and fat. First of all, they've been pegged for being donut lovers (As if this were a fault - are we not all donut lovers?). This proves to be a problem, because as we associate cops with donuts, we associate them with being fat, and therefore we think them unfit for being able to perform the physical labor that it takes to protect our society.

Furthermore there seems to be an idea that cops are just downright lazy and stupid. The first photo below is a good example showing how somebody beloved and innocent (Spongebob) is suffering the consequences of a cop's lazy and halfhearted pepperspray blast, and even further down a clip from the Simpson's shows a whole city going to ruins due to the stupidity of a group of Springfield cops (and what do you know? A reference to donuts at the end). Time and time again, pictures, TV shows, movies and internet posts will portray cops as being the scapegoat, or the stupid, fat guy who keeps getting things wrong. Sometimes someone else even has to go clean up their mess.

And more than half the time he will be eating a donut.

Now, not only is this single story incredibly insulting, but it is also potentially detrimental for our society. How can we be expected to trust the men that have devoted their lives to protecting us if we have decided that they are just a group of fat donut eating idiots? Who are we going to turn to when we are in trouble if we think our armed forces are like the last clip with Paul Blart - Mall Cop, who can barely take care of himself, let alone others?

I'm going to volunteer the idea that we look past the mean guy with the pepperspray, past the donuts, past the idea of the fat lazy guys, and try to imagine that maybe, just maybe, somebody might've wanted to spend their life fighting for peace and justice, upholding the law and keeping us safe every single day.

And yeah, maybe they eat a donut every once in awhile.

  1. Totally agree that this portrayal is insulting and can be detrimental! While I think the donut stereotype can be lighthearted, it's important to show respect for these men and women that protect our communities and loved ones. And hey, if I had their job, I'd probably need a donut once in a while.

  2. This single story is so funny for me. Especially when you are in a donut shop and a cop walks in and automatically you think, "OMG. It's true." Except for the fact that cops are also apart of the 7 billion people in the world who also should like donuts, because lets be real? Are you even human if you don't like donuts?

  6. A problem with this first story is that it actually creates public disdain. Time and time again, people question the acts of police when face with quick decisions. When a cop goes violent or arrests someone, people are always complaining, because they think their decisions don't aren't well though out. There have been many videos posted online too that show people in loud public confrontations with them because they think they are smarter than them.

  7. I feel so bad for cops right now. They have so many things they are trying to overcome and people are showing no respect to them. I know a few cops personally and they are the best.
