Photography Composition - Chase Lewis

This weekend I spent 3 days in southern Utah. We were awestruck by the variety of terrains we encountered in those 3 days.

Subject/Background
Even though the wide desert vista was impressive, I wanted the girl in the foreground walking barefoot to be the subject of this image.

Balance
The figure in this shot is pretty much right in the center of this image, but what I liked was the balance of tones. The dark slot canyon walls flanking both sides is balanced by the brightness in the center of the image. I also liked how the orange canyon walls were balanced by the complimentary blue tones.

Perspective
Funny story -- right before I took this picture, I actually fell through a frozen lake trying to walk on the ice. I wanted to take a self portrait with a tripod, but I walked out without my camera first to test the strength of the ice. I didn't make it very far before the ice gave way and I fell through in to the icy lake about waist deep. I was close to shore, and it was easy to make my way out. I loved the texture of the ripple that were accentuated by the very shallow depth of field. As I brought my camera close to the water, I wanted to capture the perspective I had for a brief moment as waded in the ice cold lake.
