Semiotics 2

I think this picture is a cool example of semiotics because there are so many symbols in this photo - some that are self-explanatory and obvious and others that are intuitive without actually ever having to learn the meaning.

The picture is of a street.  The dashes and arrows and signs in the distance are all indications of how to drive on the street.  The reason I am able to interpret that and know that this is a street is an example of semiotics.  My own interpretation is because of things I have learned since I was young: you only drive on the street, you drive between the lines, you drive in the direction of the arrows, you follow the directions on the signs, etc.

The imagery in the middle of the photograph of the grassy/flowery area in between roads isn't necessarily a symbol, but it does represent something.  There probably isn't anyone that would drive on that area, but why?  We all interpret things differently, but that interpretation that you would drive around the median is intuitive to most people.

Things can have meaning without necessarily standing for something else.
