Semiotics I: Charging Bull

Near Wall Street stands this 3-ton bronze sculpture of a bull. He is big. He is tough. He is fierce. He is strong. He is a lean machine. And, he is rather intimidating. The bull has it's eyes focused on something in the distance and he is going for it. He is ready. He is charging after it. Nothing will stop him.

This image of a bull, acting as the signifier, symbolizes New York's financial industry. Wall Street is a place of power and prestige. People who work there are determined to rise to the top and be the best. The financial world is one of continual growth. The financial industry is never satisfied. There is always something bigger, something greater, something more- just as the charging bull who keeps his eyes up and not down. However, the bull is not a particularly friendly animal. Sometimes the financial industry is not a friendly place. It can be filled with constant greed and corruption. Yet the bull can also be seen in a light of bravery and courage. Such can be the case with the economy. Sometimes economists have to take a step in the dark to take us to the top and rise above recessions and downturns. Whatever the state of the economy, the goal is always to move, or "charge" forward confidently and optimistically.
