Semiotics I

The signifier is clearly the bull statue. What it signifies could be interpreted as strong and powerful since the actual animal has those characteristics. It can also signify masculinity because it is strong and powerful and we as a society associate masculinity with those adjectives. It's made out of brass and is very large so that makes me think of it as dominating and again, powerful. The way the bull's face is arranged, with the nostrils flared and wide eyes, makes it appear angry and aggressive...perhaps even dangerous. This bull is located near Wall Street in NYC, which is known to be the most economically powerful financial center in the world. Thus, this bull represents the power that these companies have on the finances of the world. They are rich, large, and strong companies that aren't afraid to charge head first into danger. It demonstrates confidence in their power and financial stability. The majority of the people that work on wall street are men and have very strong personalities. Have you ever been to a stock exchange? There is a lot of pushing and shouting as the auctioneers try to close the best deal. This all can relate back to the actions of a bull and the fury that is shown in its eyes as you compare it to the atmosphere of the world's largest stock exchange.
