Semiotics II

This image is of nothing more than a mailbox. A place where mail for the owner of this home comes in and out. However, this is no ordinary mailbox. It has ornate detail, the gold numbers against the black looks elegant and rich. The carving details creates a symbol of wealth and class. Why does it look this way? Well whoever lives here wants the mailman and whoever else passes by their home to know that they are wealthy, classy people. You can tell by the car in the background and the size and style of the house that this is true as well. However, the patches of brown in their lawn might suggest that they aren't too particular about upkeep. These people may have chosen this particular mailbox to display the fact that they are unique. They didn't chose any standard looking mailbox. They are above the average person. Perhaps the homes around them also have fancy looking mail boxes and they are concerned about image and want to look high class as well. This mailbox seems to fit the style of their home as well. Although you can't see the entire house, the style and elements used suggests that it is quite large and expensive. Although technically all I'm doing is describing a mailbox, I'm really judging the financial status and even the personality of the homeowners just based off this one item in their front yard.
