I thought all weekend about creativity and constraints after watching the TED talk in class. How is it that limiting yourself can actually set you free and expand your creative horizons? I was inspired by Phil Hansen and his idea of thinking in the box to become more creative. Innovation comes from finding a solution to a need, and my needs are very minimal right now, so what was I to do?

As I was unpacking my room, I found artworks and photography projects I have done over the year and felt that doing an art piece for a class was trivial and unoriginal. I went through so many pictures from South Africa and felt nostalgic, which lead me to this idea. My need at that point in time was a way to remember my home and where I come from. I decided to create a long term art project, and started with this creative piece by incorporating inspiration from Phil Hansen.

Africa is my home, my identity, and what better way to represent this than through finger prints? By creating this silhouette of Africa from thumb prints to represent my place in this world. Since then I have come up with more ideas for a larger scale project.
