People Watching

My brother and I sat outside the Wilk in the quad area for 5 minutes together and wrote down any observations or perceptions we saw. We didn't talk to each other during it but we could tell when we both saw the same thing because we would laugh or it would be very obvious, like a somewhat nerdy man (only perceived as nerdy because of his tiny frame, glasses, and sneakers) wearing a spandex dance outfit running at high speed through the quad or a group of what looked like football playing (really tall and built) African American guys with backwards hats talking really loudly and using slang like "They be like". When we compared lists there were obvious differences, but it was interesting to see how he noticed mainly clothing and sounds while I noticed actions and behaviors.

For example, he wrote "plaid shirts, tie dye shirts, bell tower rings at 12, same jacket as me, fake laughs, people talking to moms on phone" while I wrote "guy eating pizza, people standing awkwardly checking their phone, super long kiss near the Wilk doors, looking at ground, fast walking" and so on. It was very interesting to try to choose what to write down- only bright colors or things that appeared out of the norm caught my eye. It was a very insightful experiment to see what people really look at or hear- I had never determined sounds could be a part of it too.
