Shalom! The luxurious life of Jewish 13-year olds

At the tender age of 13-years-old, Jewish boys and girls receive their Bar or Bat Mitzvah.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah's are essentially a coming of age celebration in the Jewish community. At this age, young Jews become responsible for observing the commandments.

The boys receive the Bar Mitzvah; Bar meaning "son" in Aramaic. The word Mitzvah translates into "commandment" in both Hebrew and Aramaic.  Similar to the boys, girls receive the Bat Mitzvah; Bat appropriately meaning "daughter" in Hebrew and Aramaic.

As in many religions, a person’s amount of activity within the religion varies from Orthodox to Reformed, and everywhere in between. No matter ones activity, the Bar/Bat Mitzvah is the event that every Jew has a desire to participate in.

This desire does not come from an overwhelming amount of faith anymore, but rather a longing for social acceptance.

The Bar/Bat Mitzvah has greatly evolved over time. It once simply consisted of the Torah Service held at the Synagogue. It included the reading and chanting of the Torah. Now, the Synagogue service is only a stepping stone for the lavish celebration. In today’s society, specifically in the United States, the Bar/Bat Mitzvah is not complete without an extravagant festivity to follow.

This celebration has escalated into a competition amongst the parents for whomever can throw the most outlandish Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Parents will go to great lengths to make sure their child is the talk of their social group. In 2013, the average cost of a Bar/Bat Mitzvah in the United States was $30,000. This is more than most weddings cost!

Some of the most ostentatious Bar/Bat Mitzvah's have included a performance from the rapper Drake, iPads as party favors, and Vegas showgirls.

This is a prime example of an outlandish Bar Mitzvah.

This book is the ultimate guide to planning a luxurious Bar/Bat Mitzvah for your child.
This is the Torah. It contains the first five Books of Moses.

  1. My roomate freshman year was Jewish and is/was one of the most spoiled people I've ever met. I love her to death but the idea of 'Jewish princesses' is definitely real!
