Compositional Photography

Subject vs. Background

In this image the Quail stands out as the subject. The contrasting colors of the birds feathers draws the viewers eye to the bird rather than focusing on the neutral colors of the snow-covered branches. The direction of the branches draws the viewers from the background to the subject. I framed the picture using the rule of thirds and leveled the image in photoshop. I also adjusted the vibrance of the color and brightened the exposure.

Balance

The subjects alignment with the pillar and the pine tree create a triangular balance. The shutters are balanced by the color contrast and the distance between them. Each of the objects in this picture informally balances each other through the symmetrical alignment of objects both inside of the house and outside of the house. In this image I used photoshop to enhance the color of the subject, brighten the exposure, and sharpen the focus.

Perspective

Our usual perception of trees is very different than the angle I chose to shoot this picture. By framing the picture with the elongated branches, I shot peering up into the tree to give an entirely new perspective. Instead of showcasing the support that the branches offer the tree, I captured the connected network that the branches give to each other. This view gives a more whimsical perception to the everyday subject we so often encounter. In photoshop I cropped the branches, enhanced the color, and sharpened the clarity.
