L.A. Girls
At BYU, when a someone asks you where you are from, and you reply "California" they automatically make a judgement about you. When they ask what part, and you say, "L.A" it makes it even worse. People want to think that because you are from California all you do is wear a swimsuit and surf all day.
They think that the only words in your vocabulary are "dude, bro, brah, and totally." And that if you are from California then you definitely are on some weird plant based (vegan/vegetarian/paleo) diet. Also if you are not blonde, tanned, and toned what are you even doing with your life. Don't even get me started on sushi.. its all we eat.
While some of these stereotypes are true, and can sometimes be really funny, they don't apply to all people. Yes, we are all obsessed with guac, all give you that. But we are not all dumb hippies who don't know how to be normal, we are just a little more out there than your average person because we are not afraid to self expression.
I know a lot of Californians who do surf, but I know plenty who don't. It's interesting to think about songs like "California Girls" from Katie Perry and "Hotel California," that push the California Bro or Girl stereotype.

ReplyDeleteWhile there might be some stereotypes associated with this group, I would hardly consider "LA Girls" as being a minority. The artifacts you chose don't really support your claim either.
