Come sail with me...

As an ex-english major I am fascinated with the idea of significance. Often we limit ourselves to what we perceive as "beautiful," leaving many things insignificant and devoid of meaning, like the gutter in the street that floods after a  rainstorm. The natural impulse is to disregard the gutter and never give it a first thought. I set out to counter this by not only acknowledging the gutter full of dirty water, but embracing it. With my wife, I made a boat out of tin foil to float the water. In the boat we took turns placing objects that carry deep intrinsic value for us. By so doing, the gutter became something interesting and significant; it became beautiful. Now the gutter carries the associated memory of floating little toys, along with the still shots that give the instance a fond permanence.
